Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Los Angeles offers a number of ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, starting with the “Cake for King” celebration at the California African American Museum on January 16th at 11 a.m. Enjoy an art workshop, face painting, birthday cake (of course!), documentaries and more at this kid-friendly event. Children’s Book World also offers a story time to honor Dr. King on January 14th at 10:30 a.m. featuring storyteller Michael D. McCarty.

The 32nd Annual Kingdom Day Parade is the biggest in the country and starts at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard before winding to Vernon Avenue in Leimert Park. Here, you’ll be treated to marching bands, floats and drill teams in a festive environment. The after-party is where treats, surprises and more await.

Fit for a “King”

Also in Leimert Park is Kiddie City, open the first two weeks of January leading up to January 16th. Enjoy free play for little ones who can leave their own handprint on the Dream Wall. Kids can write down their dreams, and on January 18th the big reveal takes place at 3 p.m.

Take advantage of a free day at LACMA on January 18th when the museum hosts bilingual tours, live music and the flavors of New Orleans. The Pasadena MLK Community Coalition is hosting free art, poetry and essay presentations throughout the month of January. How will you be celebrating?
